PROJECT BRIEF DESCRIPTION
LIKHA: An Exposition and Creative Hub Advancing Filipino Artisans of Southern Tagalog
The Philippines is home to a rich and diverse tradition of arts and crafts, deeply woven into its cultural identity yet increasingly challenged by globalization and rapid modernization. LIKHA: An Exposition and Creative Hub Advancing Filipino Artisans of Southern Tagalog responds to this cultural crossroads by envisioning an architectural space that bridges heritage and innovation, ensuring that local craftsmanship not only survives but thrives in the contemporary era.
Situated in the CALABARZON region, LIKHA reimagines the role of architecture as both a vessel of cultural memory and a catalyst for economic growth. The project proposes a dynamic facility where artisans can showcase their crafts, collaborate across disciplines, and engage with global markets. Rooted in extensive research—through literature on cultural and creative industries (CCI), interviews, focus group discussions, and expert consultations— the design integrates strategies that preserve tradition while embracing emerging digital technologies.
LIKHA’s spatial program weaves together exhibition halls, creative workshops, retail areas, and interactive cultural spaces. These are conceived as “timeless spaces”: environments that honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire future generations. More than a showcase, LIKHA is designed as a living hub of collaboration, cultural exchange, and innovation—bringing Southern Tagalog artisans and their crafts to international recognition. In doing so, the project also advances several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in fostering inclusive growth, sustainable communities, and cultural resilience.
At its core, LIKHA positions architecture as a bridge—linking people, culture, and environment while amplifying the creative economy. It is not only a home for Filipino artisans but also a platform that situates their work on the global stage, ensuring that the legacy of craftsmanship continues to evolve in a rapidly changing world.
